A half day biking tour where we discover the cultural highlights of Luang Prabang. This small charming town on the Mekong is blessed with a beautiful location surrounded by mountains and dozens of historic temples that earned her the title of a UNESCO World Heritage City.
In the morning we will take a bike and start the day of sightseeing through Luang Prabang, this wonderfully peaceful town on the Mekong. First, our guide leads us to the local morning market where we can see the locals doing their daily errands.
The tour may include a visit to the National Museum (closed on Tuesday and Sunday afternoon), and the important temple Wat Mai, which built in 1796 emphasizes the graceful architecture of Luang Prabang. Then you go on to the glamorous Wat Xieng Thong at the end of the peninsula. Here we find many interesting stories about Laos and its kingdoms.
At lunch time we go to a Laotian soup shop to eat the famous Lao "Pho". In the afternoon ride to the ancient Wat Visoun, dating back to the 16th century. Another highlight is a visit to the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Center, where we can learn about today's ethnic diversity in Laos.
The evening and sunset is best admired from Mount Phousi, the local hill in the middle of town.

We begin our journey riding our mountain bikes through the Laotian hinterland where there is much beauty to discover.
Before noon we get to the Elephant Village, located on the banks of the Nam Khan River. A beautiful, idyllic place in the center of the magnificent mountain jungle landscape. On our way through the Lao countryside we'll see farmers cultivating the land, forests of teakwood, distant mountain vistas, and the smiles of the locals who are in turn curious about their observers.
After a lunch break in the wonderful elephant village with its breathtaking view of a 600m towering mountain range, we get an introduction to the elephants. Enjoy your elephant ride (30min - 1 hr) in lush, green nature.
A boat ride takes you to the cascade of the Tad Sae waterfall where we can take a refreshing swim (waterfall dry Feb - July). After a short hiking trail in the afternoon we meet our host family in a small Laotian hilltribe village. Here we are invited to cook, eat, and converse together until you are ready for bed.

Awakened early by the roosters in the village, we start our hike through the hilly landscape of Laos. On the trek between Hmong and Khmu hill tribe villages, there is much to see and learn. We have the unique opportunity to share the cultures of rural life of the Lao as we observe the lifestyles of the Hmong and Khmu. There are many trails to choose from, depending on your stamina - some shorter and others longer.
In the afternoon we paddle back to Luang Prabang in kayaks along the Nam Khan. Kayaking this small river is a cool and relaxing way to end these 2 days of adventure. Overnight in a guesthouse in Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang - Nong Khiaw (Nong Khiau)
The trip to Nong Khiau takes us from Luang Prabang out into the stunning scenery of northern Laos. Together with locals and other travelers on the bus (public van), we wind our way through the countryside, a special experience. The journey takes us into the sparsely populated north of Laos, which most travelers never get to visit.
After 3 hours of mountains and along the Nam Ou, we reach the rural area of Nong Khiau, dominated by stunning limestone formations. Once there we have the opportunity to visit the historical caves which played a major role in the Indochina War. In the evening we'll enjoy the scenery along the river and overnight in Nong Khiau at a rustic local guesthouse.

Northern Laos - Nong Khiaw - Fair Trek to Villages
We'll begin trekking in the morning and arrive in the village of Ban Na Luang after about 2-3 hours of fairly easy hiking.
In this multi-ethnic village, we can learn a lot about the local traditions and lifestyle of the local population. The lowland Lao (Lao Looum) as well as highland Lao (Lao Soung) represent different ethnic minority groups and we can experience the differences while we stay at their homes here for the night.
The landscape is dominated by rice fields and bizarre rock formations, making this a unique natural environment as well as cultural environment.

Nong Khiaw - Luang Prabang
The next day we'll take a small path to another village where we'll take a short break before we hop onto a small boat that will take us back to Nong Khiaw on the Nam Ou river. Then we get on to the local bus that will take us back to Luang Prabang. Arrive in Luang Prabang by late afternoon. Overnight at the hotel.

You cannot get enough of Luang Prabang. Especially if you enjoy relaxing and letting the sluggish Mekong flow past you just as the time passes by.
